Day 2 of Gastech 2026 Accelerates the Critical Conversations & Global Partnerships Shaping the Future of Economic Growth

Against a backdrop of surging energy demand, the second day of Gastech 2026 in Bangkok brought global energy leaders together to address the new forces driving economic progress, industrial transformation and electricity consumption in the world’s fastest-growing markets. As the largest gathering for natural gas and LNG this year, Gastech 2026 continues to serve as a catalyst for the investments and partnerships that will power a new era of access and opportunity for billions worldwide.

Day two of Gastech’s Strategic Conference began with energy ministers and executives uniting around the essential role of natural gas and LNG in meeting the world’s mounting energy needs. Across more than 200 sessions, the event’s second day provided a platform for leading producers, policymakers, regulators and investors from across the global value chain to advance the supply strategies and infrastructure projects required to deliver secure and affordable power where it is needed most.

The scale and complexity of global energy demand remained a central theme of the Strategic Conference, especially as the expansion of artificial intelligence and improved living standards in emerging markets accelerate global electricity consumption - which is expected to double by 2050 in Southeast Asia alone. Representing one of the world’s most important producers of reliable and affordable power, James P Danly, Deputy Secretary of Energy, United States, explained the need for pragmatic policymaking to sustain this new chapter of growth:

“When you experience unprecedented demand, it takes time to build the power and infrastructure needed to meet it. That is why we are pursuing extremely aggressive policies to meet as much of the rising demand as possible. At the same time, the Department of Energy has historically had the fastest computing in the world, and we are using AI to advance research and improve productivity.”

This message was further emphasised by Sinon Vongkusolkit, CEO of Banpu, who highlighted the implications of AI and data-centre growth for Asia’s power sector. As AI-driven electricity demand intensifies across both developed and emerging markets, he explained how the energy industry must deliver the generation and grid infrastructure capable of supporting an increasingly digital and connected global economy:

“We are in the largest infrastructure build-out ever. We are talking about trillions of dollars into AI, and billions of dollars just for the grid. This demand will be huge, and while there will always be people with concerns, it is the best technology humans have invented and is going to help with productivity, efficiency and increase GDP. The question now is if we can scale power generation in time.”

Three dedicated strategic programmes drove Gastech’s high-level dialogues on international collaboration, supply security and Asia’s role as a key driver of global energy growth. As part of the new Electrification Programme, leaders from across the global power sector gathered to discuss the investment models and infrastructure projects that will define economic resilience amid an evolving global landscape. Dr. Narin Phoawanich, Governor, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), said:

“The central challenge is not only to provide clean electricity, but to make sure electricity remains reliable, affordable and secure. We continue to place emphasis on system reliability as essential for nations to achieve sustainable growth, and that is why we need to continue driving investment into the grid.”

The Global Energy Regulators Forum carried these critical conversations forward, as senior regulatory authorities and policymakers shared insights on the regulatory tools, governance models and policy approaches needed to navigate a period of structural change, technological transformation and rapid demand growth. Cecile Wake, EVP - Integrated Gas & Country Chair, Shell Australia, stated:

“Regulators around the world are faced with an increasingly complex set of challenges including geopolitical uncertainty, supply disruptions and rising demand from so many different parts of our economies. What we have all come to understand is that energy security is the foundation upon which affordability and sustainability are built. Without that, we cannot achieve the other two.”

At the same time, the launch of the Japan Energy Programme convened leading buyers, suppliers, shipowners, financiers, and government stakeholders to examine how Japan’s LNG strategy, evolving power sector and growing industrial demand are shaping regional resilience and global natural gas markets. With energy security increasingly dependent on cooperation beyond national borders, Tetsuya Azuma, Director, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI), said:

“Economies and supply chains are more interconnected than ever, so even if we secure domestic supply of crude and refined products, we need to be thinking about supply stability for the region as a whole. This is why we have been trying to export some of the crude oils and some of the refined products to our neighbours, even during the crisis.”

Beyond the conference stages, Gastech continued to demonstrate its role as a platform where dialogue translates into action. Across the exhibition and networking spaces, co-host organisations, including Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil and national consortium partners EGAT, PTT and Gulf, together with energy companies, utilities, technology providers, investors and infrastructure partners from around the world, came together to advance the commercial agreements, supply deals and infrastructure partnerships that are accelerating the delivery of secure, reliable and affordable energy.

Several agreements and memoranda of understanding were announced during the first two days of the event, including a 20-year LNG supply agreement between Venture Global and China Gas, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in strengthening energy security and meeting rising global energy demand.

As attendees and participants prepare for two more days of strategic dialogue and industry dealmaking, Gastech’s Handover Ceremony affirmed the event’s role as a catalyst for energy growth and transformation. Sharing the stage with James P Danly, Deputy Secretary of Energy, United States, H.E. Mr. Akanat Promphan, Minister of Energy, Thailand, thanked Gastech’s organisers and looked towards next year’s edition in Houston:
